Computers have totally flipped the way offices function. Remember the old days? Well, the noisy typewriters are no more. Managers getting by without secretaries is the new normal. The morning mail ritual? Almost gone. Plus, phones are not constantly buzzing. So what brought about the change?
The Great Computer Transformation
The computer has edged its way into every corner of the office. After all, it’s got everything – a desktop, files, documents, even a bin! Now, imagine turning off your computer for a couple of hours. What happens? Well, pretty much nothing. Your productivity hits rock bottom. (Your online shopping basket stays empty!) Sneaking a quick break? Forget it. There’s nothing to even pretend to do!
The shift to computer-centred work wasn’t all smooth. It was more like a surprise whack from an old typewriter! But the move to better productivity and efficiency was inevitable. And then came the internet in 1989, and it was all over for the old-school office.
Computers in the Office Now
Fast forward to today, and we’ve adapted well to these huge changes. And we seem to like it! The ubiquity of computers means the modern office is a sleek and efficient operation. But more than that, it’s also about flexibility. For instance, cool-sounding phrases like Hot Desking and ‘bring your own device’ (BYD) are in. Plus, fast Wi-Fi and cloud computing have made document management a breeze from anywhere. So, fancy working from home a few days a week? It’s all possible.
Computers – Tech Takeover?
So what about the fear of technology taking over completely? It’s less now. At this stage at least (we won’t mention AI) we are masters of technology, not its slaves. After all, we want to keep our creativity and humanity intact while letting computers handle the boring stuff.
